USWNT ROSTER FOR SPAIN IS ABOUT MORE THAN 26 NAMES
Emma Hayes has named a 26-player USWNT training camp roster for two October matches against Spain.
On the surface, it is another roster announcement.
In reality, it may be one of the most important evaluation windows of the cycle.
The United States will host Spain on Oct. 10 in Washington, D.C., and Oct. 13 in Chester, Pennsylvania. Spain is the reigning Women’s World Cup champion and currently sits No. 1 in the FIFA rankings, with the United States at No. 2. U.S. Soccer
These are also the USWNT’s last matches before World Cup qualifying.
That changes the meaning of the camp.
A Roster Built Around Questions
Hayes has spent this cycle widening the USWNT player pool.
That process continues.
Naomi Girma and Sam Coffey return after missing the June matches in Brazil.
Mallory Swanson is back in the group as she continues her return to full fitness.
Ashley Sanchez earns another opportunity after scoring 20 goals in 26 NWSL matches, tying the league’s single-season scoring record. U.S. Soccer
At the same time, Hayes has included four uncapped players.
Jordan Silkowitz has previously trained with the senior team but has not appeared in a match. Evelyn Shores, Pietra Tordin and Trinity Byars are receiving their first senior call-ups. U.S. Soccer
The combination tells us something.
Hayes is still evaluating.
But the evaluation period is getting shorter.
Spain Provides the Right Measuring Stick
Spain is exactly the opponent that can clarify the picture.
Since the end of the 2024 Olympics, Spain has lost only twice in regulation across 27 matches. La Roja recently secured qualification for the 2027 World Cup with victories over England and Iceland. U.S. Soccer
That level of opposition should test every part of the U.S. structure.
The defenders will have to manage movement and possession.
The midfield will have to compete for control.
The forwards will have fewer easy opportunities.
And new players will have to make decisions at international speed.
Spain is not simply another opponent.
It is the measuring stick.
Club Form Is Forcing Its Way Into the Conversation
The attacking group is particularly interesting.
Ashley Sanchez, Sophia Wilson, Trinity Rodman and Trinity Byars are among the leading American scorers in the NWSL this season, and all four are part of this camp. U.S. Soccer
That does not guarantee anyone a starting position.
But it does create competition.
Hayes has repeatedly shown a willingness to expand the player pool, and club performance remains one of the clearest ways for a player to demand another look.
The Next Stage Requires Decisions
Hayes has already given caps to 60 different players during her tenure.
In 2025, 44 players appeared for the USWNT, the most in one year under any coach in program history. In 2026, 41 different players have already earned caps. U.S. Soccer
That experimentation has built depth.
Now comes the harder part.
Hayes has to decide which combinations are strong enough for qualifying.
Spain will not settle every question.
But two matches against the world No. 1 should reveal which questions still need answers.
