WORLD CUP AWARDS FOR PLAYERS & TEAMS
The FIFA World Cup is remembered for champions lifting the trophy, but the tournament’s legacy is also shaped by the players, teams, and unforgettable moments honored through FIFA’s prestigious awards. THE MONEY SIDE OF THE WORLD IMAGE
The FIFA World Cup has always been about glory, emotion, national pride, and unforgettable moments. But behind the trophies, packed stadiums, and worldwide television audiences, there is another competition taking place — the financial game. For the 2026 FIFA World Cup, FIFA confirmed a record-breaking $665 million prize pool for the 48 participating nations, the largest financial distribution in tournament history. The champion alone will receive $50 million, while even teams eliminated in the opening stage will earn $9 million simply for qualifying. The expansion from 32 to 48 teams has changed more than the tournament format. It has transformed the economic impact of the World Cup for federations around the globe. Smaller soccer nations now gain access to larger revenues, better preparation resources, and international exposure that can influence the future of their programs long after the final whistle. FIFA will also provide $1.5 million in preparation funds to every qualified federation, while additional millions are allocated through club compensation and insurance programs. Altogether, FIFA’s total financial commitment for World Cup 2026 reaches approximately $727 million. The 48 nations qualified for the 2026 World Cup will have their names engraved in the World Sports History and mentioned in one way or another int the four corners of the globe. 2027 MLS Transitional Season
Major League Soccer announces the 2027 MLS Sprint Season — a one-time, high-stakes short campaign bridging the league’s transition to a new summer-to-spring calendar, aligning MLS with the world’s top soccer leagues.
MLS kicks off its transitional sprint season from February to May 2027, ahead of the 2027–2028 international calendar format.
The MLS announced details of the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, the transitional campaign that will launch MLS’s shift into its new summer-to-spring calendar, aligning the league’s schedule with the world’s top soccer competitions.
Ahead of the 2027–2028 launch of an international format, MLS will implement a one-time short season running from February to May 2027. The fast-paced, high-stakes campaign will see each MLS team play 14 regular season games from February through April.
Regular season matches will consist of intra-conference play, with teams facing each of their 14 conference opponents once — seven matches at home and seven matches away. This applies to both the Western and Eastern Conferences.
At the conclusion of the regular season, the top eight teams in each of the two conferences will qualify for the 2027 MLS Cup Playoffs.
In each conference, the postseason will be played in a single-elimination bracket format to determine a conference champion. The Eastern Conference Champion and the Western Conference Champion will then meet in the 2027 MLS Cup Final.
In addition to crowning an MLS Cup champion, the Sprint Season will carry significant international competition implications — helping determine the teams qualified for the 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup and the 2028 Leagues Cup.
Five Concacaf Champions Cup berths will be determined by 2027 MLS Sprint Season results, while 18 teams — nine from each conference — will qualify for the Leagues Cup.
The 2027 Sprint Season schedule, including each team’s home and away matchups, will be announced in the coming months.
