That question is the idea behind Campeones Cup.
Launched in 2018, the competition brings together the reigning MLS Cup champion and the qualifying LIGA MX champion for one match. There is no group stage and no second leg.

This year, MLS sends one of its most recognizable clubs into the battle.
Inter Miami CF earned its place by winning the 2025 MLS Cup, defeating Vancouver Whitecaps FC 3–1 and lifting the Philip F. Anschutz Trophy for the first time in club history.
Miami’s championship capped a remarkable rise. After setting the MLS single-season points record with 74 points while winning the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, the club followed by capturing the prize that had eluded it: MLS Cup.

CRUZ AZUL CARRIES THE LIGA MX FLAG
Cruz Azul earned the right to represent LIGA MX after emerging from Mexico’s Campeón de Campeones process, which brought together Toluca FC, the 2025 Apertura champion, and Cruz Azul, the 2026 Clausura champion.
That sends one of Mexican soccer’s historic names to Miami with more than a trophy at stake.
There are league bragging rights to defend.
LIGA MX currently leads the all-time Campeones Cup series with four victories to three.
That advantage was restored in 2025, when Toluca FC defeated the LA Galaxy 3–2 in California.
So, mathematics couldn’t be simpler:
A Cruz Azul victory would stretch LIGA MX’s advantage to 5–3.
An Inter Miami victory would level the series at 4–4.
MIAMI HAS SEEN CRUZ AZUL BEFORE
There is another intriguing piece to this matchup.
Inter Miami and Cruz Azul already share a place in the history books.
In July 2023, Cruz Azul was the opponent when Lionel Messi made his Inter Miami debut in the Leagues Cup. Messi introduced himself to American soccer in unforgettable fashion, scoring the dramatic stoppage-time free kick that gave Miami a 2–1 victory.
That night became the beginning of a new era for Inter Miami.
Three years later, the clubs meet again.
